Dog Dental Care Guide

Dog Dental Care Guide – Keeping your pet’s teeth healthy is key to the health and happiness of your furry friends. Accustoming your pet to good oral hygiene from an early age (ideally as soon as their adult teeth emerge) can help prevent dental disease and other serious health problems associated with it, such as heart disease.

Unfortunately, dental disease is one of the most commonly diagnosed health problems in both cats and dogs. Three out of four dogs over the age of three suffer from this condition. It is also the most common condition affecting dogs in the UK.

Given the widespread nature of this disease, our researchers have been studying it to find new ways to prevent and delay its onset. Thanks to their efforts, we now know that dogs are more susceptible to gum disease (inflammation of the structures that support teeth) than to cavities (cavities). This is because dogs lack the types of bacteria that cause cavities in humans. Our team also discovered a type of bacteria associated with gum disease in cats.

A Guide To Dog Dental Care

Together with our colleagues at Banfield Pet Hospital, we analyzed the prevalence of gum disease or periodontal disease in 48 of the most popular American dog breeds. Small breeds are more likely to develop this condition than larger breeds.

First, make sure your cat or dog is comfortable having their mouth touched. Gums should be pink (red indicates inflammation, a sign of disease) and teeth should be off-white with minimal tartar buildup (discolored deposits). Tartar can build up invisible below the gum line, so regular oral health checkups are necessary.

Dental disease in pets develops gradually, so it can be cured if detected and treated early. However, prevention is better than any cure, especially for small dog breeds. They are more likely to develop gum disease than larger breeds, and our research has shown that if left untreated, this condition develops quickly and more rapidly as Miniature Schnauzers age. The same study also found that gum disease occurs even when there are no visible signs of gingivitis, which is the first stage of the condition.

Establishing oral hygiene habits from an early age can help your pet tolerate and enjoy daily brushing.

Common Dental Problems In Dogs: Signs, Prevention & Treatment

Take your pet to the veterinarian for an oral health checkup every six months. Your veterinarian will examine the teeth for tartar and the gums for inflammation (gingivitis) and recommend specific treatment if necessary.

Feeding your dog chewable food can also help prevent gum disease as it reduces tartar build-up. Dogs love to chew, so when it comes to toys, choose safe toys that will protect your dog’s teeth.

You can do your best to maintain your pet’s oral hygiene with a home care regimen that includes daily brushing, scientifically proven dental chews, and regular veterinary checkups. Feeding dry food can also help maintain your pet’s oral health. Dogs who are particularly prone to dental disease may want to be fed a dry food specifically designed to reduce plaque and tartar.

And most importantly, make sure you are both safe during this process.
