Protecting Wildlife Habitats

Protecting Wildlife Habitats – Our conservation project near the Ram Durga Valley in Koppal, Karnataka aims to protect the precious bear habitat. This land near Ram Durga village, Gangavati Taluk supports rich biodiversity including endangered species such as turtles, leopards, wolves, yellow-throated bulbul and pangolin. The habitat is critically endangered due to illegal mining, encroachment and rapid deforestation. These forces, combined with ritual hunting by local communities, brought doom to the wildlife of the area. With the aim of protecting and restoring habitats, Wildlife SOS bought almost 40 hectares of land near the village of Ram Durga in 2006 to create a nature corridor and allow vulnerable habitats that were at risk to connect with the forest reserve. By restoring it, Wildlife SOS provided protection to the ecosystem and its biodiversity.

In April 2012, the habitat restoration project was expanded to an additional 10 hectares with the generous support of BHEL, PSSR, Chennai. In agreement with horticultural experts, seedlings of tree and shrub species that are most suitable for the area were chosen, and almost 10,000 seedlings were planted. We planted mahuva, neem, arjuna, mango, amla, Indian beech, bamboo, apple, Indian laburnum, fig, banyan, jamun, bohenia, bodhi and others along a 10-acre restoration area and integrated irrigation to support natural wetlands. A borehole, a drip irrigation system and a solar powered electric fence were installed to provide water and protect the area. In addition, members of the local community are engaged in management and patrol duty. In a short period of only 2-3 years, the project achieved a plant survival rate of 90%. Seedlings planted at 1/2-1 inch in girth and 2-3 feet tall now averaged 8-9 inches in girth and 8 feet or more in height. In areas where restoration began earlier, it was observed that wildlife species began to return and use that habitat.

1. Deforestation, urbanization and climate change are just some of the many threats that wildlife habitats face today. As humans continue to expand their footprint on the planet, it becomes increasingly important to implement effective conservation efforts to protect these precious habitats and the diverse species that call them home. In this section we will explore some of the key strategies and initiatives aimed at preserving wildlife habitat and ensuring the survival of our planet’s unique wildlife.

2. Protected areas: Establishing protected areas is one of the most effective ways to preserve wildlife habitat. National parks, nature reserves and nature reserves provide a safe haven for a wide range of species, allowing them to thrive without the disruption of human activities. These protected areas often serve as vital breeding grounds, migration routes, and food and shelter sources for wildlife. For example, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park in Australia protects the world’s largest coral reef system, providing shelter to countless marine species.
