This adorable dog, whose name means “dog with curly hair”, was originally from the Tenerife Bichon. The Tenerife Bichon originally came from the Mediterranean, but ended up in the Canary Islands and the island of Tenerife. Because of this common ancestor, Bichon Havanes and Maltese dogs are considered relatives. They were the royal dogs of Italy and France in the 14th and 15th centuries and retained their status until the early 19th century.

Considered one of the most popular dog breeds today, Bichons were virtually unknown outside of France, Belgium and Italy until the 1930s! World War I soldiers brought them to the United States, but they weren’t popular until the Piccolults promoted them. The Picolts were a French couple who followed their daughter to America, brought two Bichons from France and began breeding them. Known for their friendliness and cheerfulness, these dogs are fun family dogs, but they can be difficult to house train. Daily brushing is a must, but it’s a small price to pay for a sneeze-free home and a big dog if you’re looking for a hypoallergenic small breed!

Considered the easiest to train of all the small hypoallergenic dog breeds on this list, Miniature Schnauzers are the smallest of the Schnauzer family. Schnauzers were bred with small dogs such as the Miniature Pinscher, the Afenschauzer and the Pomeranian or Poodle to give us the small dog we know and love today. Miniature Schnauzers were first bred by German farmers to be rat catchers and do other farm work. They are the only terriers without British ancestry. They are intelligent, friendly and have a lot of energy, making them perfect for families with young children and other pets. However, their characteristics can vary, making the breed unpredictable. Like the Bichon Frise, the Miniature Schnauzer has a double coat that needs to be shed daily, but it deserves to be free of fur on your carpets!

Like their cousin the Bichon, Havanese dogs are descendants of the Tenerife Bichon and the Blanquito de la Habana. These are the only dogs born in Cuba. Before they were known as Havanese, they were called Havana Silk Dogs because of their fur. They were probably brought over by Spanish explorers and quickly became the dog of the aristocracy. They were unknown in the United States until the 1950s, when Cubans emigrated from Cuba following the rise of Fidel Castro and communism. Considered intelligent, funny and well-behaved, Havanese dogs are one of the most popular small hypoallergenic dog breeds for city dwellers. Their gentle nature makes them great family dogs, and their energy is compatible with children. Unlike their cousins, Havanese dogs are easy to train, but can be strong and aggressive. Their fur is long and requires daily grooming to prevent mats. Some owners braid their dog’s hair, making it look like a Puli dog.

If you are looking for a dog with lots of personality, the Yorkshire Terrier is the dog for you! Yorks originated in the English county of Yorkshire in the 1800s. Victorian women loved them, but they weren’t like little hypoallergenic dogs. They were brought to England by Scottish weavers who wanted to breed rat terriers to keep rats away from their fabrics. They were introduced to America in 1872, much earlier than most of the breeds on this list.

Yorkies, as they are known, are considered fierce and loyal, making them great dogs for families and seniors alike. They crave companionship, so owners will buy or adopt two at a time. Like most terriers, Yorkies are easier to train than other breeds. Their long, silky coats require daily grooming and look closer to human hair than regular pet fur. According to the American Kennel Club, the Yorkie has been in the top 10 since 2013!

The Maltese breed is the oldest of the Bichon breeds, originating in the Mediterranean region of Malta in the 4th and early 5th centuries BC. These dogs were worshiped by the ancient Greeks and Romans and were considered a royal dog, adding another royal dog to this list of the best hypoallergenic dog breeds. The ancient Greeks even erected monuments to their Maltese dead, unlike the Egyptians and their cats. When Rome fell, the breed was rescued by the Chinese and turned into a show dog. Like their cousins, Maltese are known for their luxurious coats, but require daily grooming to prevent mats and stains. They are gentle, playful, energetic and intelligent, making them wonderful family dogs. Although not easy to train, they respond well to positive reinforcement and dog attention.

This honorable mention on the list of small hypoallergenic dog breeds, the Shih Tzu is one of the oldest but goodies! Known as the “lion dog,” Shih Tzus are wonderful dogs, but they shed more than the other dogs on this list. Shih Tzus are royal dogs; they were raised as friends of various Chinese royal families. It is generally accepted that Shih Tzus were created by Chinese breeders using Tibetan stock and are most likely a cross between the Lhasa Apso and the Pekingese. They were kept secret for many years and were not brought to America until the 1930s.

Like the Maltese, the Shih Tzu is considered one of the fourteen oldest dog breeds. They are indoor dogs and love companionship. They are affectionate, playful and friendly and very gentle with children. Their coats require regular grooming, and owners alternate between keeping their long natural fur or cutting their hair short to make it easier to manage. They are more difficult to train than other breeds and are considered “high flyers” due to their ability to jump long distances in the air.
