Biodiversity Conservation: Method, Difference

China has developed a system of nature reserves with national parks as a focal point. Since 2015, 10 experimental national park systems have been launched, including Sanjiangyuan, and 90% of terrestrial ecosystem species and 71% of national priority wildlife species have been effectively protected . Wild animal habitats are constantly expanding and their populations are increasing.

The number of giant pandas in the country has increased from 1,114 to 1,864 in the past 40 years, while the number of rock ibis has increased from just 7 to 5,000. The number of Asian elephants in the wild has increased from 180 in the 1980s to around 300 now, and the Hainan gibbon population in the wild has increased from less than 10 in both groups 40 years ago to 35 in five groups.

Several ecological protection and restoration projects have also been implemented in China. From 2016 to 2020, 1,200 kilometers of coastline and 23,000 hectares of coastal marshes were restored. About 25 percent of global green space growth from 2000 to 2017 was in China, making it the world’s largest contributor. In 2021, forest and steppe vegetation reached 23% and 56.1%, respectively.
