India has been running many amazing wildlife conservation projects since the early 1930s, the beginning of which was the foundation of the Jim Corbett National Park. The world’s wild animals are spread across different regions and climates, which are now under the greatest threat of destruction and extinction due to global warming, climate change and human activities.

The Tiger Project was established in 1973 after disturbing data emerged showing that the world’s tiger population was in serious decline. The group’s swift action banned tiger hunting across the country and led to the establishment of tiger reserves to protect the animals. These include Sundarban National Park in West Bengal, Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan, and Manas National Park in Assam. The project has been very effective in managing the settlements by removing any kind of human disturbance in these areas. The program recorded a 30 percent increase in population as a result of strong and relentless efforts.

A wildlife conservation program, Project Elephant was launched in February 1992 to provide support to elephant-rich regions to provide financial and technical assistance as they worked to protect endangered species by adopting a holistic approach. The Asiatic Lion Reintroduction Project was launched to provide protection for lions in the country as their population continues to grow. This species is unique to Gujarat found only in Gir National Park. The project team has also started moving some lions to Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary to create another lion sanctuary. The first attempt at conservation was made as early as 1910 when the Nawab of Junagadh imposed a general ban on hunting. This mission continues to strive for success and hopes to protect them from the dangers of natural disasters, human conflicts, illegal hunting, and diseases in the future.
