Amphibians in Uganda is a citizen science program to map and track the distribution of amphibian diversity in Uganda’s protected areas. Participants will learn how to spot and identify reptiles to help scientists identify conservation concerns for amphibians and reptiles.

Project title. Distribution assessment of red-listed frog species to guide establishment of Uganda’s first ex situ support program for endangered frog species

Leptopellis carisimbensis is a species of frog in the family Arthroleptidae. It is found in southwestern Uganda. The species is currently listed as Vulnerable (VU B1ab-iii)) under the IUCN Red List (IUCN 2016). Along with others, they are a vulnerable species in Uganda, facing large scale population reductions due to habitat loss, introduced species and fungal diseases, logging, charcoal burning and the use of agrochemicals.

EWCO is working to establish Uganda’s first ex situ support program for vulnerable and endangered frog species and to attempt ex situ breeding of species to maintain genetically viable populations that can eventually be introduced into their natural habitats.

In-situ conservation plans include surveys to confirm the current distribution of the species as adults and tadpoles, monitoring of known populations, implementation of habitat conservation measures and training for forest rangers, in local communities and identification and conservation exercises through citizen science and conservation.
